WEASEL TOLD ME TO!

...Sorry, had to say that. :)

So, I wanted to make a game. Maybe even make a game with Weasel. :3
But, I have no idea how to. Could someone please help me with this? *cough* Weasel *cough*

Yes, I would actually was going to ask, too. (I also almost made this thread for you Darkegle.)

I'd be happy to help in whatever way I can!

The first thing anyone should know about making games:

IT'S REALLY EASY TO HAVE A GOOD IDEA.

I have a whole bucket of game ideas that I think are the best ever, and all my game-making friends have a variety of awesome ideas I can build on or work with them for. The same is true for any programmer or game designer.

If you have a really good idea, and that's all - you'll have a very hard time finding someone to work with (unless your idea legitimately is the best idea of all time).

Next, know that there are some specific things that people do in game production:

Programmer: This guy will do all the game logic and program up a storm. (me equivalent!)

Artist: This guy will do up all the graphics that the programmer will put into his game. I did this myself for SpaceSquid and it shows. Greg does it for Protonaut and makes me look pro. ;) They will also help out with forum styling, website mockups, and the like.

Audio: This guy will do all the music and sound effects. I tried doing this myself for SpaceSquid as well. Now I have Roger to make me sound pro. ;)

Specialty Programmers: Sometimes you can be the best programmer in the world for game logic, but you can't do HTML/CSS in Strict mode. Maybe you are the cat's meow at AI but you can't do multiplayer/network code. If you have a certain specialty, there's a chance you can fit that gap in a project. My girlfriend Aubrey, for example, did my HTML/CSS code for the site because I suck at it.

All of those people contribue to the game design, though one person may or may not retain the "vision" and veto some ideas.

If you aren't one of the above - again, you will have trouble finding someone to work with. Your best bet it to pick one of the above and try it out - get a project under your belt. That's what I did - I hadn't made a game before, so I gave myself 30 days and cranked out SpaceSquid.

That project was fast enough and of high enough quality that I am no longer a "dreamer" and am an actual "do-er".

In any case, I do know how to make sounds and music. I do know how to do my own graphics. I do know how to do my own code. I am well versed in all fields of game design! This helps me a lot when I'm dealing with people like Greg and Roger, as I know how their tools work. I am very very bad at graphics and sound, but I know the tools - and it makes me a better programmer.

Likewise, a good Flash artist will have a basic understanding of how to code in flash - even if he isn't the best at it.

Well-rounded individuals are a godsend.

I recommend you head on over to one of the indie games websites - such as TIGSource (http://tigsource.com). There you can find a lot of tutorials for a lot of methods that go into game making, as well as a lot of people looking to hook up with others for projects. There is a similar scene going on at FlashGameLicense (http://flashgamelicense.com).

If you're interested in my (Free) development environment and how I learned - I can go into those details :)

I suggest a bit of googling.
Download flash (or Flex or FlexSDK), lookup some tutorials and figure out how to make something small.
Then come up with a good idea and execute on it.

There are some really good forums out there to help with flash game dev.

darkeagle i suggest you to let someone else do the games for you.

If you arent supper good at it or have the new Mario, you should try focus on something else

Maybe write a book or make some music

If you want to use lousy AS2, you can use this set of tutorials: http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2006/10/29/flash-game-creation-tutorial-part-1/

Learning programming is a long (yet rewarding) task. Maybe ask a parent/teacher to learn how to program with you? It might be a fun experience!

You know... This thread reminds of this. http://scratch.mit.edu/

It's programming down to the dirt basics were it does most everything for you, but it's a start.

Definitely agree with this!

I made my first program in BASIC when I was 10. It was an adventure game based on Weird-Al lyrics. My dad helped me out.

I fiddled with some basic scripting stuff (IRC-equivalent; batch files; etc.) also with the help of my Dad.

I took some programming classes in high school and learned Turbo Pascal, and with that I made some neat games for the first time.

That was over 10 years ago now, and I've been programming and learning every year since then. It is definitely something you CAN pick up in 10 days or so, but to get really good at it, it has to become your life. :)
